Dame Elizabeth Blackadder was born in Falkirk, Scotland, and studied at Edinburgh University and Edinburgh College of Art from 1949 until 1954. In 1954 she was awarded a Carnegie Travelling Scholarship, which enabled her to visit Yugoslavia, Greece and Italy, where she was impressed by the Byzantine architecture and mosaics she saw. In 1956 she married the artist John Houston. Blackadder was the first woman to be elected as a full member of both the Royal Scottish Academy in 1972 and the Royal Academy in 1976. She was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 1982. She shows her work regularly at the Mercury Gallery in London. She lives and works in Edinburgh.
