High Commissioner’s Residence

In 2005 we added a number of new works to our existing display of art in the High Commissioner’s Residence in New Delhi. Two large monochromatic paintings of London by John Virtue were placed in the entrance hall close to Howard Hodgkin’s smaller abstract prints from his 1971 series Indian Views. Works already at the Residence included Jacob Epstein’s sculpture of the Indian poet, Sir Rabindranath Tagore (1926), and James Fergusson’s nineteenth century prints from Picturesque Illustrations of Ancient Architecture. Fergusson was an architectural historian whose scenes of temples and lakes contrast vividly with our display of silver leaf screenprints by contemporary artist, Gary Hume.

William Hodges’ eighteenth century painting, A View of a Mosque at Raj Mahal, India, once owned by Warren Hastings, Governor General of Bengal, also returned to the Residence following its inclusion in a major international retrospective of the artist’s work.
